A Rattlesnake Story

A story about Willie "Shorty" Cornelius relates that when he was a small baby, his mother left him sleeping on a blanket while she worked in her garden nearby. She also left a lunch beside the infant to take to the man working in the field. When she returned to baby and lunch, a rattlesnake was helping itself to a fine meal, not one bit interested in the child. Mother Anna used her hoe or rake to kill the reptile, which had 23 rattles.9

     His baptism name was Carl Jacob Cornelius.4 He lived at Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, on 1 June 1900 with John Cornelius and Anke Margaretha Cornelius.5 Charles Jacob Cornelius was also known as Charley Cornelius. He was self-employed as a farmer. On 15 April 1910 Charles Jacob Cornelius and Bertha Marie Cornelius lived at Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa; Also enumerated in this home: Margareth Willet, teacher, age 59 or 39, born in Wisconsin, public school teacher.6 They bought property from John Cornelius on 5 March 1912 at Section 19, Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, This was the entire southeast 1/4 of Section 19, the Reistroffer parcel, measuring 40 acres.7 On 1 January 1920 Charles Jacob Cornelius and Bertha Marie Cornelius lived at Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa.8 Charles Jacob Cornelius, the father of Lawrence Carl Cornelius, presented him for baptism on 4 October 1925 at Salem Lutheran Church, Andrew, Jackson County, Iowa.
